Why birds???

Why birds?

For a while now, I have been obsessed with observing birds in urban spaces.

This has been inspired, in no small part, by my lovely friend Anna Marrows' gorgeous paintings and prints.

This is a great example of contemporary art-work. Anna gives us images of creatures at odds with their environment. She uses the bird as a symbol. Birds assimilate into urban life much easier than humans. They continue to live a colourful, free existence. In many ways they are the only animals to successfully adapt to urban life. Despite the shifting perspectives of the post modern condition, Anna's work shows us an optimistic outlook. There are moments of beauty amongst the alienated landscapes.

The theme of birds has inspired my latest triptych of short stories entitled "The Phoenix of Ramkhamhaeng,"

What is urban life?

What is success?

What is narcissism?

What does it mean to fly through all the stories ever written and not have faith in any of them?

Is there a post-modern aesthetic?

All of these questions are discussed in
"The Phoenix of Ramkhamhaeng,"
