My fabulous experiences of unrequited love...

... and indeed they are fabulous!

Talking with my friend Dee the other night I felt a little low. My spring-time romance has proved once again to be a whirlwind of emotion culminating in the creation of a beautiful piece of theatre and another lovely song.

I really don't mind.

The other night I received a goodnight kiss from an absolute sweetheart. Kicking my heels on the cobbles homeward bound I caught myself smug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug, All the hard work pays off you know... FACT!... What a sensation!

It is true that the austerity promoted by contemporary 'post-modern' culture sweeps through London and favours the traumatic disengagement of sentiment. But - the ability to indulge in a unrequited crush is free and is exhilarating. Some people I talk to think it's sad and delusional, but I am a writer of songs and of fiction - by definition I am a little deluded - I need a muse!

Dee helped me understand this is not sad, it's a beautiful thing to offer love and be rejected, and all of the emotion and the drama entailed is there for all to see on the page and the stage. It is my medium and from it I have extracted some beautiful material, of which I am very proud.

I left home and forged a life for myself on my own and have proved to be a resourceful little monkey at times - and yet I have managed to keep the cynicism at bay and maintain the ability to become a fool in love - and let me tell you that is no easy thing.

So three cheers to all the hopeful romantics who cherish the ability to indulge their emotions in a little harmless unrequited love. We are the ones who really revel in our fantasies and savour the invention of fiction; it is one of the gifts of being human!

And dare I say it is a bastion of hope in our cynical mundane world.
